Per la memoria collettiva ed il suo significato per i popoli e le societ\u00e0, questa settimana \u00e8 unica. Il 27 gennaio il mondo intero ha celebrato il \u201eGiorno della memoria\u201c e ricordato la Shoah subita dagli ebrei nella IIa Guerra Mondiale. La commemorazione \u00e8 l’occasione per fermarsi e riflettere su tutti gli attacchi contro gli esseri umani e su come l’odio razziale \u00e8 nemico dell’umanit\u00e0 stessa.<\/p>\n

In molte lingue le parole \u201euomo\u201c, \u201emente\u201c e \u201ememoria\u201c sono collegate. Per definizione ricordare ci pone di fronte a cosa vogliamo essere, quali siano i nostri valori, come vogliamo definire il nostro presente e costruire il nostro domani. La nostra memoria ci definisce e ci interroga sul nostro essere. Siamo responsabili di cosa e come ricordare.<\/p>\n

In Bosnia Erzegovina il tema della memoria storica collettiva \u00e8 ancora estremamente sensibile. Nei discorsi pubblici la memoria \u00e8 fortemente dibattuta. Vediamo versioni ed interpretazioni diverse dei fatti storici in competizione tra loro, perch\u00e9 gli obiettivi sociali e politici influenzano come guardiamo al passato. In un certo senso in Bosnia Erzegovina i morti non possono riposare in pace e ne soffre anche la vita contemporanea.<\/p>\n

Malgrado la sofferenza non possa essere cancellata, \u00e8 possibile assumere una posizione attiva verso i problemi che segnano una societ\u00e0 nel suo complesso.<\/p>\n

Il primo passo \u00e8 chiederci chi dobbiamo ricordare. Il male purtroppo esiste. Alcuni hanno commesso crimini contro l’umanit\u00e0, ma ci sono anche coloro che hanno provato ad opporsi, senza riguardo alla loro origine o provenienza.<\/p>\n

Distinguiamo allora tra coloro che hanno difeso l’umanit\u00e0 e si sono opposti al male da quelli che non l’hanno fatto. Distinguiamo tra coloro che sono state vittime innocenti, civili durante le guerre, e quelli che sono stati i carnefici, da ogni parte. La storia dimostra che, anche quando sono commesse atrocit\u00e0, alcuni di quelli coinvolti nell’attacco lo rifiutano e tentano di aiutare le vittime potenziali.<\/p>\n

Dobbiamo ricordare quanti che hanno difeso l’umanit\u00e0 e si sono impegnati contro il male.<\/p>\n

Nella IIa Guerra Mondiale molte persone, alcune famose, altre meno, hanno rischiato la loro vita per savlare migliaia di ebrei dallo sterminio. Durante l’ultima guerra in Bosnia Erzegovina sette civili italiani, tra giornalisti e volontari, sono caduti per mano di ogni parte, mentre cercavano di aiutare vittime innocenti.<\/p>\n

Pi\u00f9 importante ancora, e spesso taciuto, \u00e8 che in Bosnia Erzegovina si sono impegnati molti eroi anonimi: persone che hanno messo a rischio la propria vita per salvare amici o anche estranei, quando hanno capito che erano in pericolo.<\/p>\n

Ho incontrato persone che ammettono di essere state salvate da qualcuno \u201edell’altra parte\u201c, ma che ancora non si sentono in grado di dichiararlo e ringraziare pubblicamente i propri salvatori, perch\u00e9 questi potrebbero essere accusati di tradimento dalla \u201eloro parte\u201c. Tuttavia siamo tutti dalla stessa parte: siamo tutti umani.<\/p>\n

Un risultato importante della Shoah \u00e8 stato il riconoscimento degi \u201eGiusti tra le Nazioni\u201c, coloro che, seppure non ebrei, hanno mostrato rispetto per la vita salvando quelli che erano a rischio, anche a costo di diventare vittime a loro volta.<\/p>\n

Molti di questi eroi, di queste persone comuni che hanno onorato la vita salvando potenziali vittime, oggi vivono e respirano anonimamente in mezzo a noi, in tutta la Bosnia Erzegovina. \u00c8 importante rispettarli e ringraziarli per la loro umanit\u00e0, cos\u00ec come chiamare tutti a riconoscere il loro esempio e valore.<\/p>\n

Allo stesso modo in cui i giusti sono ricordati a Gerusalemme, nel \u201eGiardino dei Giusti\u201c, sarebbe bello che venissero riconosciuti anche nelle citt\u00e0 della Bosnia Erzegovina e a Sarajevo, la \u201eGerusalemme d’Europa\u201c, con il loro giardino. \u00c8 giunto il momento che anche la Bosnia Erzegovina ed il mondo onorino queste persone anonime che, ogni giorno, portano ancora valore e speranza all’umanit\u00e0.<\/p>\n

Collective memory and the righteous of BiH<\/span><\/p>\n

When it comes to collective memory and its meaning for peoples and societies, this week is like no others. On 27th of January the entire world has marked the \u201eDay of Memory\u201c recalling the \u201eShoah\u201c suffered by the Jews during WWII. The commemoration is an occasion to stop and reflect on all attacks against human beings and how racial hatred ultimately is an enemy of humanity itself.<\/p>\n

In many languages the words \u201eman\u201c, \u201ememory\u201c and \u201emind\u201c are related. By definition, remembering calls into question what we want to be, what our values are, how we want to define our present and build our tomorrow. Our memory defines us and interrogates our being. We are responsible for what and how we commemorate.<\/p>\n

In BiH the issue of collective historical memory is still extremely sensitive. In public discourse, memory is hotly debated. We see versions and interpretations of historical facts competing with each other, as present social and political objectives influence the way we look at the past. In a way, the dead cannot rest peacefully in BiH and life in the present suffers because of that.<\/p>\n

Although sorrow cannot be erased, it is possible to take an active stance towards the problems that mark society as a whole.<\/p>\n

The first step is to ask ourselves whom should we remember.<\/p>\n

Evil, unfortunately, exists. Some people committed crimes against humanity, but there are also those who tried to counter this, regardless of their background and origin.<\/p>\n

Let us first discern, then, those who defended humanity and resisted evil from those who did not. Let us distinguish between those who were innocent victims, civilians in the event of wars, and those who were perpetrators, on any side.<\/p>\n

History shows that – even when atrocities are committed – some of those involved in the attack reject it and try to help the potential victims.<\/p>\n

We need to remember people who defended humanity and stood against evil.<\/p>\n

In WWII many people, better or less known, risked their life to save thousands of Jews from extermination. During last war in BiH seven Italian civilians, journalists or peace volunteers were killed by all sides, while they were trying to bring help to innocent civilians.<\/p>\n

More importantly, it is well known, but seldom said, that many anonymous heroes were active in BiH: people who put their life at risk in order to save friends or even strangers when they realized that they were in danger.<\/p>\n

I met people who recognize having been saved by somebody \u201eon the other side\u201c and yet still today feel unable to credit their saviours, as they might be accused of treason by \u201etheir side\u201c.<\/p>\n

We are all on one side however: we are all humans.<\/p>\n

One important outcome of the Shoah has been the recognition of the \u201eRighteous among the Nations\u201c, those who, although not Jews, showed respect for life by saving those at risk even at the cost of becoming victims themselves.<\/p>\n

Many of these heroes, of this ordinary people who have honoured life by saving potential victims, live and breath anonymously among us here today, around BiH. It is important to pay respect to them and thank them for their humanity, while calling on everybody to recognize their example and value.<\/p>\n

In the same way as the just people are recognized in Jerusalem, in the \u201eGarden of the Righteous\u201c, it would be beautiful if they were recognized also in the cities of BiH and in Sarajevo, the \u201eJerusalem of Europe\u201c, with their own garden: it is high time that also BiH and the world honour those anonymous people who, every day, still bring hope and value to humankind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"(English below) Per la memoria collettiva ed il suo significato per i popoli e le societ\u00e0, questa settimana \u00e8 unica.
